XL: EDRD 302 This course examines the theories and foundations of literacy and language development in the primary grades. This course provides students with the understanding of reading and writing as integrated processes. Students will learn developmentally appropriate techniques and methods in early literacy instruction for diverse populations, with special consideration for English language learners and struggling readers. Topics will include phonemic awareness and phonics, vocabulary development, comprehension strategies, emergent writing instruction, grammar and spelling, and children’s literature, as well as whole-class and small-group instructional strategies and assessment and evaluation of early literacy skills. This course will focus on systematic, explicit, scientifically based reading/writing instruction and data-driven decision-making model. Candidates will also incorporate authentic data collection into instructional plans.
