BIOL 111 Demystifying Health and Medicine

What makes blood red? What is the purpose of chest compressions in CPR? This introductory course meshes language used in science and medicine with real-world scenarios, equipping students with an understanding of human health and science in general that is both fundamental and practical. Topics include medical and scientific terminology, basic technical and communication skills used in science, the connection between the chemical basis of life and major body systems, technology and practice in modern healthcare, what diseases are common in the United States and why, and other real-life applications in everyday health and medicine. This foundational course may function as a bridge to future science courses and other courses preparing healthcare professionals, but does not count toward a major in Biology.
