SPED 351 Adolescent Lit: Students with Disabilities

This course will focus on systematic, explicit, scientifically based reading/writing instruction and data-driven decision-making model for students with disabilities in the middle and secondary grades. The focused literacy topics for this course include assessment and instructional practices for vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. A particular emphasis will be on developing reading skills for content area classes such as science and social studies. Teacher candidates will gain knowledge on evidence-based instructional practices, accommodations and modifications, culturally relevant pedagogy, and integration of technology. Also, candidates will incorporate authentic data collection into instructional plans and IEP development, including considering individualized differentiation strategies to support unique needs.
