Center for Learning Strategies (CLS)

Dr. Karen Walker, Transition Coordinator for Center for Learning Strategies

Charlene Scamihorn, CLS Coordinator

The Center for Learning Strategies (CLS) emphasizes peer facilitated academic support options to increase student success and retention. Peer Tutors and Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders participate in extensive training and our peer tutoring program received Level 1 International Tutor Training Program Certification from the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) in August 2021.

CLS offers courses to help students enhance their reading, math, and learning strategies. Although they do not count toward hours required for graduation, the courses are counted when considering students’ semester course loads.

The CLS also offers the following services for Rockford University Students:

  • Peer tutoring, supplemental instruction (SI), and professional tutoring
  • Learning and study strategies assessment to identify academic strengths and challenges
  • Workshops to enhance student knowledge and application of college success strategies
  • Test preparation for GRE, GMAT, and NCLEX
  • Testing accommodations for student needs documented by Disabilities Support Services (DSS) in the Lang Health Department

There is no tuition charge for matriculated Rockford University students. Other CLS services are free of charge for all RU undergraduate students.
