EDUC 297 Serve & Study Abroad - Education

This course is designed to provide the students in the education department with an opportunity to explore culturally responsive teaching and leading through a cross-cultural experience in Ecuador.  Students in this course will be interacting with the children and families in Ecuador and navigating themselves to unfamiliar locations within unfamiliar territories. Through these experiences, students will have the opportunity to increase their cultural awareness and will have a better understanding of their reactions in different settings related to the significance of language and cultural differences. This course is designed to provide a three-pronged experience: Through this field experience course, 1) students will imbibe the spirit of global citizenship by engaging in a service project and interacting with a different culture. 2) Students will develop culturally responsive lesson plans focused on play-based learning and science curriculum developed for students aged 6-16. 3) By helping build a playground and thereby promoting a center for local cultural development, students will further Rockford University’s service mission, the Rockford University Education Unit Conceptual Framework, and the Illinois State Board of Education’s Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading Standards (CRTL). Note: Students will be involved in physical activities that require engagement in physical exertion requirements of medium work which may involve lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds and actively engaging in physical activity for several hours a day while in Ecuador.
