RELG 340 Minds, Mystics, & Mysticism
Mysticism or intense religious experience is a component of the major monotheistic religions originating in the Middle East: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. We will examine the history and context of mystical experience in these three traditions from the perspective of primary texts as well as biographical and autobiographical material on individual mystics who lived and wrote in the last two millennia. Further, we will explore approaches to the mystical mind in disciplines such as philosophy, physics, and cognitive science; speakers with expertise in these disciplines as they relate to consciousness will be invited to address the class.
