CLAS 123 Greek Civilization

In this class, we will study the ancient Greek world by analyzing Greek art, politics, philosophy, theater, history, and literature. We will cover different historical periods from 1600 to 400 BCE. Some of the topics are Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, Greek ceramic and architecture, Herodotus’ account of the Persian Wars, the histories of Thucydides about the Peloponnesian War, the tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, and Plato’s dialogues, among others. We will explore why the Trojan War has had such a hold on us from ancient times until today, how Greece interacted with the rest of the Mediterranean territories, how some Greek cities began to develop democracy, and in what ways the Greeks continue to resonate with us over two millennia later.
