PSYC 358 Brief Interventions for Helping Professi
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a state-of-the-art, evidence-based communication and counseling framework designed for evoking and strengthening a person’s inner motivation for positive behavior change. Originally developed in the drug and alcohol field, MI is now widely applied as an effective brief intervention in a variety of settings, including social services, health care, mental health, public health, education, and criminal justice. This course will introduce students to the theory, processes, and skills of MI and to additional brief intervention strategies that are useful within the human services professions, including crisis management, de-escalation, and mental health first aid. Students will be guided through modules of learning activities to develop brief intervention skills and to begin building competency-based proficiency in MI.
