SPED 490 Prof Practices for the Special Educator

This course provides teacher candidates an opportunity to integrate research-based knowledge and pedagogical best practices from the special education program coursework into a culminating capstone project. In this course, teacher candidates will collaborate with parents, students, related service professionals, paraprofessionals, and community stakeholders in an effort to improve student achievement and transition into adult life for those individuals with disabilities. Candidates will determine the role of the special educator within the general education environment, determine the effectiveness of interventions, and develop strategies and services that support individuals with entitled needs. This course requires a field-based experience to facilitate assessment of collaborative practices in a school setting and must be taken the semester prior to preservice teaching.
PRQ: Special Education faculty approval; passing score on the Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP) or its equivalency
