HIST 215 Latin America to 1898
This survey of Latin American history begins to Columbus’s arrival in the Western Hemisphere and continues through the Spanish-American War. It will explore pre-Columbian societies, European colonial policies and the consequences for indigenous peoples of the region, the evolution of Latin American colonial centers and culture, and the process of independence across the region. In addition, the early development of modern Latin American nations and their struggle for progress will be examined up to the end of the Spanish empire in the Americas with its defeat by the United States in the war over Cuba.
