HIST 216 Latin America since 1898
Even before 1898 when the Spanish empire was finally gone from the Western Hemisphere, Latin American nations have worked to build prosperous political, economic, and social systems. This course will explore their successes, and failures, in advancing the progress of their nations and citizens. Examination of how these nations responded to each other, the hegemonic United States that often overshadowed them, and the rest of the world will be part of the course. From Cuban independence just before the twentieth century through world wars, economic crises, a Cold War, authoritarian dictators, and rising levels of democracy, this survey will explore Latin Americans efforts to succeed in the modern world.
