BIOL 230 Microbiology and Infectious Diseases
In this course specifically designed for non-biology majors, we will explore the biological world of microbes, or microscopic organisms that are invisible to the naked eye. We will focus largely, though not exclusively, on bacterial pathogens and viruses, and discuss how these microorganisms have an impact on human health and changes in society. We will also discuss ways in which the spread of microbes is controlled, either through natural immunity, or with the use of antibiotics or vaccinations. Finally, we will put everything we have learned together as we explore specific microbial infections one body system at a time. This course does not count toward the biology major.
