RELG 321 The Invention of Satan

Lucifer, the Devil, Beelzebub, Iblis, the Dark Lord… Satan is popularly understood to be the enemy of God, the tempter of the righteous, the proprietor of Hell, and the tormentor of the damned. Yet Satan did not originate in the Bible as the archenemy of God but as an agent of God, part of the divine court. This class traces the complex evolution of the concept of Satan through Judaism, Christianity, and Islam as the figure was re/invented in successive generations exploring what has been and still is at stake for culture and society in conversations about evil.
