SPED 565 Special Educator: Collaborative Processes
The purpose of this course is to help teacher candidates develop the skills necessary to work cooperatively with professionals, paraprofessionals, families, and community members. The teacher candidates will gain insight into families' perspectives and experiences by studying the factors that shape family participation, engagement, and development. Teacher candidates will consider the ethical responsibilities of working with families and individuals with disabilities. Teacher candidates will develop an awareness of culturally linguistically and diverse students and their families, ensuring positive collaborative experiences. This course emphasizes the characteristics, structures, and processes associated with effective collaborative teaching and teaming practices. Particular importance is placed upon collaborative service delivery models and means that support effective partnerships among professionals, paraprofessionals, and parents/caregivers. The topics covered include characteristics of families; culturally responsive practices; ethical responsibilities; effective communication; assessment of family strengths and needs; family-centered practices; interpersonal processes and skills to work collaboratively with other educators; the roles and responsibilities of related services professionals, classroom support personnel, and strategies for collaboration.
