HIST 575 Colonial Latin America
This class begins with a general study of pre-Colombian cultures and Columbus’s arrival in the Western Hemisphere and continues through the Spanish-American War (1898). It will explore pre-Columbian societies, European colonial policies' consequences for indigenous peoples of the region, the evolution of Latin American colonial centers of culture, and the process of independence across the region. The use of primary sources will help students understand the dynamics of Latin American societies and policies and the tensions between the colonies and Spain.
