EDUC 605 Philosophical Foundations of Education

In this course, students will explore various theoretical and philosophical approaches to education. Through a variety of lenses, categorized by pre-modern, modern, and post-modern periods, students will come to understand how education has been conceptualized and constructed socially. Moving beyond the bounds of the typical PK-12 institution, this course examines what it may mean to be educated, both informally and formally. Epistemological explorations in the course may include ancient Greek educational traditions, empiricism and objectivism, psychological approaches, post-modernism, critical theory, and cultural studies, amongst others.
