EDUC 643 Principal Leadership in Urban Schools

This course explores the core practices and skills, as well as the values and beliefs of highly effective, responsive urban school leaders that result in cultures of belonging and high levels of learning for all students. The course includes an overview of the “nuts and bolts” of the day-to-day operations of the school and accountability for equitable outcomes for all students. Participants will examine models of recruiting, hiring, coaching and mentoring of instructional staff, supervision of instruction, evaluation, collaboration and professional learning of teachers through a critical lens. Participants will create a personal leadership practices playbook to prepare to cultivate these skills, values and beliefs and enact these practices as a building principal in an urban school. 

This course includes field experience and internship requirements aligned to the course objectives and Principal Illinois Administrative Endorsement for Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) licensure requirements.
