ECON 327 Economic Growth and Development
Why have some countries been able to experience rapid economic growth and development with tremendous consequences for standards of living, while others have remained stuck in poverty traps? This course explores the factors which explain differences in income and standards of living between countries. Among the issues discussed are the causes and effects of economic growth, poverty, and inequality in the context of theories of economic growth including the role of capital investment, education, population growth, technological progress, financial credit, and government institutions. Issues of gender inequality will also be discussed throughout the course as related to gender differences in access to education, participation in the labor market, poverty, cultural norms, and government policies.
