SOCI 309 Race and Ethnic Relations
This course will examine the social construction of race and the meanings associated with various racial and ethnic identities in the U.S. and in a global context. The legacy of past conqueror and indigenous identities will be assessed at micro and macro sociological levels of analysis. Students will learn the importance of socio-historical context on status associated with one's racial and ethnic identity and examine social movements, legislation, and policies relevant to race and ethnicity – whether those policies reinforce power differentials or seek to ameliorate inequality. Students will also learn about various conflicts involving racial and ethnic identities as well as approaches to conflict resolution for racial and ethnic conflict.
PRQ: POLS 295 or SOCI 295 (students must earn grade of C- or above) or consent of instructor.
