ENGL 584 Food and Literature
“Food is love. Food is conviviality. Food is politics. Food is religion. Food is history. Food is consolation. Food is fuel. Food identifies us and who we are. It can even help us make sense of our world.” A recent Literary Hub author proposes these as reasons for why we “hunger” for writing about food. After all, what better way for an author to pose some of the most important questions about who we are as people, what makes us “tick,” and how we relate to each other? This course will look broadly at the use of food in literature to discuss issues related to gender, immigration and culture, power and consumption, the environment, and human health. The class will also give students experience with teaching strategies they can use in their own classrooms, including blogging, developing Google Maps projects, creating audio posts, and community-based learning.
