SWRK 110 Human Behavior & Social Environment I

This course provides an introduction to the complex interplay between individual behavior and the social environment, focusing on key theories and concepts in social work practice. Students will explore the psychological, sociological, and cultural factors that influence human behavior across the lifespan. Emphasis will be placed on understanding how social systems—such as family, community, and institutional structures—impact individual experiences and vice versa. Key topics include developmental stages, socialization processes, the role of culture and diversity, and the effects of socioeconomic factors on behavior. Through case studies, interactive discussions, and reflective assignments, as well as applying concepts to real-world experiences, students will develop a foundational understanding of how to assess and intervene in various social contexts. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the analytical skills necessary to recognize and address the challenges faced by individuals and communities, laying the groundwork for effective, ethical and research-informed social work practice.
