SWRK 175 Intro Substance Use & Addictive Disordrs
This course offers an in-depth exploration of the assessment, treatment, and management of substance use and addictive disorders. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the psychological, biological, and social factors contributing to substance use and addictive behaviors, while also examining evidence-based approaches to treatment. Topics include the identification and diagnosis of substance use disorders and addictive behaviors, the role of co-occurring mental health conditions, treatment planning and a variety of therapeutic modalities such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing. Students will also explore the cultural and ethical considerations in treatment, as well as strategies for preventing relapse and promoting long-term recovery. The course incorporates case studies, practical examples, and opportunities for skill development to prepare students for real-world clinical practice in a variety of settings, including outpatient, inpatient, and community-based care.
