Chemistry Program

As the “central science,” Chemistry is rooted in mathematics and physics, yet has applications in Biology, medicine, material science, environmental science, and engineering. Since all substances are chemicals, an understanding of Chemistry is vital not only to scientists, but also to all who make decisions in their personal lives regarding health, lifestyle, and choice of material things. In the public sphere Chemistry aids with issues issues such as clean air and water, nuclear power, solid waste disposal, and recycling. Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry will obtain the necessary foundations to become high school science teachers, sales and management personnel at chemical companies (with appropriate business courses), or to pursue careers in patent law. A Bachelor of Science in Chemistry opens up career opportunities including graduate school, pharmaceuticals, and synthesis and other assorted industrial applications. The Chemistry program is certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS), allowing the department to offer an ACS-Certified Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. 

Secondary Education Licensure (Grades 9-12)

Students interested in becoming licensed to teach Chemistry at the secondary level must complete all Chemistry major degree requirements, a minor in secondary education, and additional General Education requirements for state licensure.
