THEA 207 Play Script Analysis and Design
This course offers an in-depth exploration of play script analysis with a unique focus on the integration of design elements in theatrical production. Students will learn how to analyze plays critically, with an emphasis on understanding the playwright's intent, character development, themes, and dramatic structure. Additionally, the course examines how design elements—such as set, costume, lighting, and sound—enhance and support the storytelling process on stage.
Through detailed script readings, scene breakdowns, and class discussions, students will explore how design choices reflect the themes and emotional tone of a play. The course will introduce key design principles and the collaborative role of designers in a theatre production, exploring how their work interacts with the director’s vision, the actors’ performances, and the audience’s experience.
By engaging with a range of plays from different genres and periods, students will gain practical skills in script analysis, while also developing an appreciation for how design elements contribute to a production’s overall aesthetic and narrative impact.
