THEA 278 Period Styles I

1200 BCE- 1100 CE. This course offers a survey of the evolution of architectural styles, interior decor, and costume history across different time periods and cultures. Students will examine the historical, social, and cultural contexts that have influenced the design of buildings, the evolution of interior spaces, and the development of clothing styles. Beginning with ancient civilizations and moving through the Renaissance, Baroque, and modern eras, the course will explore key movements, iconic structures, influential designers, and the intersections of art, design, and fashion.

Through lectures, case studies, and hands-on activities, students will gain an understanding of how architectural and decorative styles reflect societal values, technological advancements, and aesthetic preferences. The course will also delve into costume history, highlighting the role of fashion in cultural expression, identity, and social status.

By the end of the course, students will have a base understanding of how architectural styles and fashion trends are interwoven with historical developments, and will be able to analyze and discuss architectural, decor, and costume elements from a critical and informed perspective in their design work.
