SOCI 318 Social Movements and Social Change
This course presents an historical overview of social movements and changes in America that have impacted its social institutions, social organizations, and value systems. Social movements studied include reform movements such as abolition, the women’s movements, reformation, and education and labor reforms. Protest social movements are also studied and include the protest cycle of the 1960s, the gay and lesbian movement, and the environmental movement. Additionally new concerns challenging the status quo (example Black Lives Matter) are analyzed to see if they can be considered social movements using a four-stage model of emergence, coalescence, bureaucratization, and decline.
