HIST 573 Topics in African-American History

Beginning before the 1619 arrival of African captives to work in colonial Virginia, this course starts with a view of 16th century Africa when Europeans greatly expanded the slave trade to meet their New World colonial needs, first in the Caribbean, South and Central America, then into North America. The course emphasis will be on the experience of Africans in the British American colonies—and the new nation—through the Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement, and Black Lives Matter. Students will investigate relationships not only between Black and White societies but also within African-American communities to help understand the nature of African-American life in US history.
