HIST 574 The Ancient Mediterranean World
After a glance back to the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt, students in this course will study 2,000 years of ancient Mediterranean history. Study will include Greek history from the Mycenaeans, the fifth and fourth centuries BCE, to the Roman conquest; and the Roman world from its monarchy, to the Republic, Empire, and early Christianity. One focus will be the interaction of history and culture. Another will be the uses and manipulations of ancient themes in subsequent contexts, up to today. Readings will consist of both primary and secondary sources and ancient Greek and Roman cultural hallmarks.
