EDUC 617 History of Schooling
For better or worse, schooling is wrapped up in notions of control. Perhaps, most obvious, schools seek to control what students learn. But other types of control exist also, often less obvious. These include: controlling where people live (and by extension attend school) and how students behave and are potentially punished in schools. History of Schooling grapples with the issues surrounding control in schools, seeking to understand how they can both empower and hinder students. The course will generally focus on the Midwest, with occasional readings on other parts of the country, particularly when covering debates about curriculum.
